SELF DEFENSE TECHNIQUES

Martial arts involve a desire to learn, and enjoy learning, about self-defence whilst also developing those areas, and others, over time e.g. long-term technical understanding and development (the ‘art’), fitness, confidence development and social engagement.

Self-defence in itself is primarily tasked with educating individuals in the world of physical ‘self-defence’ (obviously) or ‘self-protection’. These can, and should, include such things as awareness and avoidance. Physical confrontation is a last resort and one that is dealt with at length within jiu jitsu. You will be taught, from the very early stages, to fall safely so that you can learn how to put someone on the floor and end any confrontation. Our very first grading to yellow belt includes some of the most effective put downs you will ever learn.

A key differentiating factor of jiu jitsu is that it addresses different levels of aggression; you will develop skills in:

avoidance,
distancing,
staying on your feet, getting off the ground [if indeed you ended up there],
‘milder’ physical confrontations such as domination attempting wrist and arm grabs without escalating the levels of aggression,
more threatening aggressors who are way too close and may be grabbing you bodily etc [you really shouldn’t let them get that close],
ttackers striking, punching, kicking at you,
defending yourself against weapons such as sticks, knives and chains
and multiple attackers doing any or all of the above.

You will develop your abilities to:

be more aware,
deal with stress,
use distance to your advantage, use of simple effective strikes to appropriate parts of the body,
use of wristlocks, armlocks and other pain points of the body,
putting people on the floor, using their own momentum, and disabling the

The ongoing development of use of an aggressors balance against them is a key and core part of our ongoing development of the art. Knowledge of ones own sense of balance and that of an aggressor is a skill honed over a period of time. Over that time you will also get to meet and socialise with a great bunch and make some lifelong friends.
